Colgate-Palmolive Company (1996-2017)

Colgate-Palmolive Company is a leading global consumer products company whose brands are recognized in over 200 countries. Colgate is the worldwide leading oral care brand and for over 40 years, has been committed to delivering oral health education to children around the world. In 1994, Colgate launched its global flagship program, "Bright Smiles, Bright FuturesTM" (BSBF), a multi-tiered initiative to promote the importance of oral health through education and prevention. After working on the creation and implementation of this program in the USA, LBP's Marketing Director, Ms. Winney was invited to facilitate the program’s roll-out in Australia and New Zealand.

Commencing in 1996, she identified the key components necessary for the program’s success and sought buy-in from key stake-holders such as state governments, professional associations, teachers, parents and community health providers.   With the primary focus of the program to reach children in schools through educational materials, Ms. Winney engaged dental professionals, school teachers and state government boards of education to evaluate the appropriateness and appeal of the program components. The materials included an animated video, storybook, posters, audio-cassettes, cd-rom, parent and child take-homes, calendar and teacher guide with the central character, Dr. Rabbit unifying the materials and messages.  Ms. Winney adapted all materials for local standards, supervised the new creative and package design and designed the roll-out and distribution strategy. In February 1997, the BSBF Oral Health Education Kits were offered via a solicitation mailer to schools and the program was fully subscribed within two months.

To ensure the program’s implementation and longevity, Ms. Winney devised and conducted a series of “train-the-trainer” workshops for public health dental health professionals working in schools and community settings. Offered through state health departments and conducted at the state and regional levels, these workshops were instrumental in the adoption of the BSBF program nationwide.  After the initial success, Colgate invited Ms.Winney to remain as a consultant to oversee the program’s annual budget, new creative and fulfillment.

In 2004, Ms. Winney received the Colgate-Palmolive Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Innovation. This award acknowledged her role in the conception, design and creation of the BSBF Exhibit for the World Dental Congress in Sydney, 2003. The exhibit comprised a series of children’s activity stations showcasing the broad range of BSBF educational components, from computer games, animated videos to physical activities. Children and families participated in the staged concerts and “shook hands” with Dr. Rabbit, the character mascot dentist. The extensive wall-displays featured program materials from around the world and the global art gallery presented the winning art from the program’s annual Art Contest. This exhibit received the most visitors of any exhibit at the Congress and enabled Colgate to dramatically leverage their event sponsorship.

In 2010, Ms. Winney launched Clean Hands, Good HealthTM, a pre-school handwashing program which has expanded to include online resources. The program is fully subscribed every year, reaching over 322,000 children in Australia and New Zealand annually.

Now celebrating 20 years in Australia and New Zealand, Bright Smiles, Bright Futures has reached over 10 million children.
